WHAT IS TAI CHI?
 .
TAI CHI is a series of movements that are performed in a smooth, flowing manner over a period of time that can range from two to thirty minutes.  Originally created as a self defense art form, it is now used to promote relaxation, to improve strength and balance and to enhance health.  Movements are done gently and will soft transitioning from one to the next, similar to waves on the ocean.  This continuous flow is sometimes called meditation in motion.  Breathing during the movements is slow, deep and gentle.
.
The practice of TAI CHI stimulates blood flow, reduces stress, increases flexibility and strengthens muscles and joints.  The movements are low impact and simple to perform, yet complex enough to stimulate the mind and the body.  TAI CHI can be performed by persons of all ages and who have any level of physical ability.  The mental concentration, deep breathing, relaxing and sinking of the body plus weight shifting generates a tremendous inner strength throughout the body.

TAI CHI for ARTHRITIS PROGRAM

In 1968, Dr. Paul Lam, then a medical student, realized that he had been experiencing signs of osteoarthritis for years.  He began using TAI CHI as a means of therapy following practices used for years in China.  He continued with TAI CHI as a Physician and TAI CHI Instrustor in Sydney, Australia.  In 1997, Dr. Lam and a group of TAI CHI and medical experts developed the Twelve-Movement TAI CHI for Arthritis Program.  The Sun Styoe TAI CHI was chosen because:

  1. After any movement forward or backward with one foot, the other foot follows, providing more mobility for persons with arthritis.
  2. The form contains powerful Qigong exercises which facilitate healing, relaxation and improve breathing.
  3. Its high stance makes it easier for beginners and older persons to  learn.
  4. Its great artistic depth holds student interest

The original 12 movements were expanded to 23 several years later and recently an additional 22 movements were added to become the Second Level of the TAI CHI for Arthritis Form.  Instructors are trained to assist and adapt to the student's particular restraints of movement or strength.
